Chernihiv
Chernihiv, one of the oldest towns in Ukraine, is rich of history and world known for its unique ancient churches (some from the 12th century). Once the 2nd most important city of the Kievan Rus, nowadays Chernihiv is the administrative center of the north-eastern region of Ukraine.
The affluent river that flows through Chernihiv – Desna, is the left tributary of Dnipro (‘Desna’ means “right hand” in the Old East Slavic language). This river has many beautiful beaches that stretch for many kilometres.
People have settled in the region over two millenniums ago. And according to the items uncovered by archaeological excavations, the town itself seems to have existed at least in the 9th century. For many centuries Chernihiv was the second most important city and often serving as a major regional capital. This city of churches was the capital of a principality also named Chernihiv, but the city weakened after the Tatar invasion in the 13th century. Afterwards it was almost forgotten until the modern times, when the railway junction, a port, and an air and highway transport hub have been built in this area. After the massive industrialization, this urban city started manufacturing synthetic fibers, pianos, foods, consumer goods, tires, woodwork, wool processing, and metal goods and machinery. Now more than 300,000 people live in Chernihiv.
