Zhytomyr may not be as popular as other cities in Ukraine, but believe us, Zhytomyr is a smaller, but still just as beautiful, upcoming tourist destination that is worth a visit. You will be surprised by some of the unique things to do and places you can explore!
Founded in the IX century on the steep banks of Teteriv and Kamyanka Rivers, Zhytomyr is one of the oldest and most beautiful small cities of Ukraine. We start our Zhytomyr city tour by visiting remnants of the oldest building in the city – the Jesuit monastery. Founded in 1724 by the Jesuits, who were given land by the Polish King Augustus second, it grew and flourished for centuries, but was neglected and finally demolished in the 1980th by the Soviets. Fortunately, some ancient building s have survived through the WWII and the Soviet times. During the tour we get to enjoy the beauty of the 18th century Saint Sofia`s Cathedral on Zamkova Square, 19th century Saint Michael`s Cathedral, and the Transfiguration Cathedral, one of the highest buildings in the city. The locals say that its bell tolls can be heard even 20 km away! Once inside, we get impressed by the unique icons painted by Mykhailo Vasiliev.
Then we take a stroll along the pedestrian Mykhailivska street where we get entertained by inspiring street musicians and talented artists, gradually getting into the spirit of modern Zhytomyr.
We walk through the Park of Eternal Fame, learning about tragic and heroic years of WWII before we get to the observation platform on the top of the hill to enjoy a picturesque view over the Zhytomyr canyon on Teteriv River. The banks of the river are covered with weird-shaped rocks, one of which is very special. This rock on the left bank of Teteriv is called “Chatsky`s head” due to its shape that reminds us of a human profile. It is considered a geological monument of national importance and is listed as one of the seven miracles of Ukraine!
After about 3 hours of Exploring Zhytomyr we have 2 optional places to visit: the Gagarin Park with its 45-meter high suspension bridge and magnificent panorama of Teteriv river, or the only Museum of Cosmonautics in Ukraine that used to be the home of the prominent Ukrainian scientist and engineer Serhiy Koroliov. While the first option that offers an optional bridge rope jumping might be the must-see place to visit for all thrill seekers and nature lovers, well-curated Museum of Cosmonautics is the place to be for all those interested in the history of rocket production and astronautics.
On the way back to Kyiv we might make an optional stop for a short rest at one of the natural wonders of Ukraine – the Korostyshiv Canyon. Located about a 30 drive from Zhytomyr, Korostyshiv is a go-to place for fans of photography. Two artificial canyons hidden from the public eye among the huge pine forest provide an excellent location for pictures. In recent years, Korostyshiv has also become popular among rock climbers, divers, hikers and other fans of active leisure.
