Immerse yourself in the rich history of the Odessa region on this exciting journey to Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi, one of the oldest cities in Europe.
It takes about 1.5 hours to get to Belgorod-Dnestrovsky from Odessa, but it’s well worth the ride, especially considering the fact that on the way you see beautiful local villages, colourful agricultural fields, and the picturesque Black Sea coast with a number of old and modern resorts. On the road our expert guide shares with you exciting legends of Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi, which is often called a city of 12 cultures as throughout its 2500 years of history it has been under the rule of Greeks, Romans, Goths, Bulgarians, Mongols, Armenians, Italians, Moldavians, Turks, Jews, Russians and Ukrainians.
Nowadays Belgorod-Dnestrovsky is a small town that has a lot of places worth visiting: from the highlight of our tour – a huge well-preserved medieval fortress, Akkerman, and the remnants of the 4th century Greek city Tyra, to a unique 14th century Armenian church and the 16th century Greek Church of John the Baptist on a high plateau overlooking the Dniester Estuary.
After you learn the most intriguing facts from the city’s history, see the real Scythian tomb and Sarmatian crypt, and explore other main points of interest, – you can just enjoy some free time, have a delicious lunch at the open-air restaurant or visit local Museum of history to see its archeological artifacts.
But if you ordered a full day 9-hour trip – our tour continues with a visit to the Shabo wine factory, founded in 1821 by the Swiss colonists. After a short ride you take a guided excursion through the winery and the only centre of wine culture in Ukraine. You see century-old Swiss cellars, once visited by the famous Russian poet, Alexander Pushkin, and King Carol ll of Romania, and modern wine making facilities. We end our visit with a memorable wine tasting session and an optional (but delicious) dinner.
Incredible journey through the history of the Odessa region, full of amazing facts and historic destinations!
